Indoor, semi-outdoor, or outdoor: pick the placement first

A digital signage display is a commercial-grade screen built to run far longer than a domestic TV. Placement decides almost everything else, so it is the first question we ask. Indoor covers lobbies, waiting areas and menu boards. Semi-outdoor means a screen facing out through storefront glass, where direct sun would wash out an ordinary display. Outdoor is fully exposed: bus stops, plazas, exterior walls.

Unlike an LED wall, these are fixed sizes. You choose a screen from a range rather than having one built to your wall.

The four types

• Indoor Standard: offices, lobbies, waiting areas, menu boards. Rated for 16 hours a day.

• Semi-Outdoor / Window-Facing: storefront glass and sun-hit interiors. Rated 24/7 and readable in direct sunlight.

• Outdoor Weatherproof: bus stops, plazas, exterior storefronts. Rated 24/7, all-weather.

• Touchscreen / Interactive: self-service, wayfinding and ordering. Rated 24/7.

Screen size is a separate choice from type. Wall-mount runs 10.1" to 98", floor-standing 32" to 86", and outdoor 32" to 98". Portrait or landscape, with wall, floor-standing, ceiling-hung or kiosk mounting.

What the cheaper option gives up

An Indoor Standard screen is the least expensive of the four, and the reason is straightforward: it is rated for 16 hours a day, not 24, and it is not bright enough to fight direct sunlight. Put one behind storefront glass facing west and it will look washed out by mid-afternoon. If the screen faces the street, or needs to run overnight, the semi-outdoor model is the honest recommendation even though it costs more.

• One screen, fixed size, ready to mount: a digital signage display. Fastest to install, lowest cost, and enough for most lobbies, menu boards and storefronts.

• Several screens tiled into one large picture: an LCD video wall. Sharp at close range, with a fine bezel line between panels.

• Any size, any shape, seamless, or outdoors at scale: an indoor LED wall or outdoor LED wall, built to your wall rather than chosen from a list.

• Glass you want to keep see-through: a transparent LED display.
